The record heat we’ve been having here has been rough on a lot of things. My tomato plants would probably argue they’ve had it the worst. I just can’t seem to water them enough to get them through the daily 95+ degree temps. Other people seem to be doing alright. I see huge, healthy plants dripping with ripe red fruit.
Mine have decided to live despite me. Or perhaps to spite me. I don’t know which.
I’ve kept them on life support long enough for the ones already there to ripen. And I’ve picked a few, and (despite the appearance of the branch from which they were plucked) they tasted really good!
Perhaps I should just stick to flowers.
I know I am a little late on the upswing but I was one of the Lucky Mom’s who got to taste those tomatoes before they went south and I must say whatever you did or didn’t do, they made an awesome Capresi Salad. Thanks for sharing.

I’ll try again next year! Maybe I can outsmart them in 2012!

Our tomato plants at the community garden are looking very sad. We may try an all natural or organic fertilizer so we can get some delicious, homegrown tomatoes.
I’ve asked around here about how others are getting theirs to survive. Most are being watered twice a day. I’m lucky if I feed my kids twice a day. Something had to suffer. 🙂
Have Mr. Wonderful build you a pvc pipe frame and cover with visqueen plastic it will create a greenhouse effect and will keep in the moisture. Gary did it here one year for the bird of paradise plants to keep the spring wind off. Then we finally gave them to the arboretum last year.
Cool idea, only The Lucky Mom would have to do it herself. 🙂
